Next Meeting: Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at 6:15 PM
Our monthly meetings resume the second week in September! Contact us for details.
Soroptimist International of Raleigh, NC meets the second Tuesday of each month from September through May at Hudson Memorial Presbyterian Church, 4921 Six Forks Road (between Lassiter Mill Road and Millbrook Road). Most meetings are open to guests.
In March 2009, Soroptimist International's global service project was a primary focus. Project SIerra, a four year partnership with Hope and Homes for Children, aims to raise over $2 million USD to transform the lives of some of the most deprived women and children in the world, living in Sierra Leone. Learn more: Soroptimist International. In the business meeting, we reviewed the status of various club projects, including our forum series currently underway to raise community awareness of Human Trafficking and its impact in North Carolina. More information on trafficking is available at Soroptimist International of the Americas.
In December 2009, we enjoyed a catered supper prior to wrapping gifts we had purchased from a wish list supplied by each low-income mother for her child. So each mother can be the gift-giver, she makes a specified monetary contribution for each child. These contributions are used to sponsor other programs in the neighborhood throughout the year. This was the ninth year for our Christmas Angel program for a southeast Raleigh neighborhood. Ninety children and their mothers were gift recipients.
In May 2009, Katie Hyde of Duke presented information on Sam's House, an orphanage in Nepal. The number of children living on the streets in Nepal has risen steadily, with more and more children being trafficked for labor and sex. The United Nations estimates that more than 20,000 children there are currently "at risk." Orphanges provide an option other than the street, and often offer outreach programs to support health, nutrition and education.
Our meetings typically include a program (featuring topics related to our mission of improving the lives of women and girls), a time for getting to know each other, light refreshments, and a short business meeting. If you are interested in attending one of our meetings to learn more about our organization and its mission, as well as to see how you can contribute your unique skills and experiences, please contact membership@soroptimistraleigh.org or call (919) 846-1321.
We would enjoy meeting you and learning of your interests!
